In an era where sustainability is at the forefront of global concerns, Trina Solar continues to make significant strides in adhering to its operational policies of integrity and transparency. To this end, we have elevated our governance initiatives, creating sustainable value for shareholders and stakeholders alike, all of which we outline in detail in the Trina Solar 2022 Sustainability Report.
This year, we’ve transitioned from Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting to a more comprehensive Sustainability Report. This shift aligns with international high-standard sustainability reporting frameworks to provide a balanced, transparent, and accurate account of our sustainability actions and performance over the past year.
Let’s dive into the sustainable development initiatives, accomplishments, and goals for Trina’s management of carbon emissions, energy, water resources, materials recycling, and waste management.
Recognition and Certification
Before delving into the specifics of the 2022 Sustainability Report, it's important to acknowledge a few achievements in the past couple of years. In 2021, Trina received the world's first mutual recognition marks from UL Solutions and Environmental Product Declaration in the PV Industry. In 2022, Trina was recognized as an "Industrial Product Green Design Demonstration Enterprise." These milestones underscore Trina's unwavering commitment to green and sustainable practices in the solar energy sector.
Sustainable Development Goals
Carbon Emissions Management
Trina has set ambitious goals for carbon emissions management and uses transparent and scientific verification data for low-carbon development.
By 2025, Trina aims to reduce the intensity of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of Category 1 and 2 solar photovoltaic products by 50% compared to the base year 2020. This reduction extends to cell and module products as well. Currently, the greenhouse gas emissions per unit of cell products stand at 23.76 tons of CO2 equivalent/MW, while module products emit 9.20 tons of CO2 equivalent/MW.
Energy Management
Another critical aspect of Trina's sustainability efforts includes energy management. Trina intends to reduce integrated energy consumption significantly across all product categories by 40% by 2025, relative to 2020 levels.
Furthermore, Trina is pursuing achieving 100% renewable energy use in global manufacturing and operations by 2030. One avenue to achieving this goal involves Trina’s plan to save 100 million kWh of power consumption from 2021 to 2030 through energy-saving and consumption-reduction projects. Presently, integrated energy consumption per unit of cell products is at 5.55 tons of standard coal/MW, while module products consume 1.96 tons of standard coal/MW.
Water Resources Management
In water resources management, Trina is working to decrease consumption intensity. By 2025, Trina plans to reduce the water consumption intensity of solar PV, cell, and module products by 20% relative to 2020 levels. Water consumption per unit of cell products currently stands at 384.89 tons/MW, while module products consume 39.83 tons/MW.
Material Recycling and Waste Management
Trina is deeply committed to material recycling. In 2022, we achieved an approximate 80% package recycling rate while we continue actively working at improving the waste "3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle)" policy, with the ultimate goal of achieving "zero" landfill waste by 2030.
Employee Safety and Green Factories
In 2022, Trina made significant strides in employee EHS (Environmental, Health, and Safety) training and enhanced the organizational structure of the EHS committee. With a dedication to developing eco-friendly green factories and low-carbon operations, Trina encourages all its global facilities to obtain certifications such as "Green Factory" and "Net Zero Factory.”
Collaboration for a Sustainable Future
In this pursuit of sustainability, Trina also looks beyond its operations. By 2030, the company aims to promote and use renewable energy, striving for 100% renewable energy use in global manufacturing and operation. To help accomplish this goal, Trina welcomes collaboration with international partners and stakeholders to combat climate change and build a sustainable future.
As Trina continues to take significant strides in sustainability, the 2022 Sustainability Report demonstrates our unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic prosperity. We stand proud in our dedication to a green and sustainable future and hope it sets a remarkable example in the solar energy industry and beyond.
