Trina Solar Co., Ltd. (“Trina Solar” or the “Company”), a leading global PV and smart energy total solution provider, has provided 86 megawatts of solar PV modules to the Torre Antonacci project in the Italian San Severo area, Foggia province. The company’s high efficiency Tallmax modules were deployed for this grid parity project.

With a total installed volume of 86MW, this project is the biggest solar farm in Italy that is operating without governmental subsidies or incentives of any kind. The PV plant generates up to 140,000 MWh of clean energy annually, sufficient to cater to the electricity needs of 48,000 households in the surrounding area and avoiding more than 263,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

The Tallmax module employed in this project with up to 395W power output is part of Trina Solar’s completely renewed product portfolio. Its 144 half-cut monocrystalline PERC cells make for higher yield, while the unique cell string layout can significantly reduce power loss caused by inter-row shading. The multi-busbar cell design can lower module working temperature, thus improving efficiency and output.

Operating a PV plant without a steady feed-in tariff requires an innovative, solid business model. Margherita Srl, the investor and site owner, has opted for a merchant approach, selling the produced electricity at market price. Luca Carosielli, project engineer and shareholder of Margherita Srl, commented: “We are very proud of this project which contributes to accelerating our country's energy transaction towards renewable energies. In addition to the contribution in terms of reducing carbon emissions, I hope that this can also be an incentive for all operators in the sector to invest in grid parity, which in Italy still seems to be slow to take off."

Gonzalo de la Viña, Head of Module Business Europe at Trina Solar, said: "Grid parity has been the holy grail of the PV industry for many years now. We are delighted to see that finally the prerequisites for taking subsidy-free projects from the concept stage to reality are there. PV has come a long way and is very cost competitive nowadays. We are proud to be a driving force in bringing LCOE down even further with our highly efficient PV modules, and expanding the reach of solar energy for the benefit of all mankind."
