The SEAT in the Sun project, developed between Gestamp Solar and Trina Solar, aimed to make production processes more environmentally friendly by generating large-scale electricity using solar panels as shade canopies over parking areas at the Martorell factory. Electricity is generated at the same time that the Trina Solar TSM-PC05 multicrystalline modules protect vehicles from adverse weather conditions.

The modules, placed on pre-built structures, create a curtain to protect vehicle paint from the effects of ultraviolet rays; they are just as efficient at this task when there is little solar radiation, a cloudy sky, or snow.

The project was built in several phases: first at a pilot plant on the rooftop of SEAT headquarters, then at two plants on the roof of assembly workshops and the garages that cover two parking areas for finished vehicles, and finally on the roof of the factory workshops and on shade canopies over the car park. The finished project covers the roofs of six workshop plants and four car parks, enabling an annual reduction of approximately 7,000 tonnes of CO2.
