Project Blue

Topojë, Albania

Utility

In Albania, the city of Topojë receives over 2,850 hours of sunshine each year. Despite the significant potential for solar in Albania, it remains an energy source that is largely untapped. To harness this potential, Blessed Investment and Matrix Konstruksion enlisted Trinasolar to help develop Project Blue, a large-scale ground-mounted PV park that sets standards for sustainable energy production in the country.

Project Blue is the first utility-scale initiative in the Balkans constructed without government subsidies. It features Trinasolar’s ultra-high performance Vertex dual-glass bifacial modules and the Vanguard 1P single-row trackers. With an installed capacity of 67.5 MWp, the project is expected to generate 108,000 MWh annually, significantly contributing to environmental sustainability with estimated annual CO2 savings of 1,900 tonnes.

Despite the high irradiation levels in the region, the project faced challenges due to the local landscape and weather conditions. As Arian Leskaj, the president of Matrix Konstruksion, notes, “Our partnership with Trinasolar has enabled us to implement innovative solutions tailored to Albania's unique environment. Their comprehensive support from design through implementation has been crucial to the project's success.”

Trinasolar’s Vertex modules are engineered for challenging environments, with dual-glass construction that ensures durability against high winds, sea salt spray and periodic flooding. Paired with the Vanguard 1P tracker, which maximises sunlight capture and adapts to varied terrains using micropiles for stability, this integrated system optimises energy production and reliability over its 30+ year lifespan.

As Besnik Leskaj, president of Blessed Investment, highlights, “Trinasolar’s robust module-tracker-software package and expert consulting have been instrumental in navigating complex technical and environmental challenges.”

By providing comprehensive system-level solutions that extend from initial consultation and groundworks through to design, implementation and post-project support, we ensure optimised solutions for our clients. As Gonzalo de la Viña, president Europe at Trinasolar, explains, “This ensures the system is fully optimised and the various components are perfectly integrated with one another, given all products come from Trinasolar.”
