2019.08.08

The inaugural list of Top 500 Chinese Companies by Patent has been announced, with Trina Solar taking pride of place among them.

Trina Solar has always placed great importance on patents and intellectual property. For example, it has set up its own IP management committee and IP management department, which are responsible for coordinated planning and management of Trina’s IP work. By March this year Trina Solar had been awarded patent certificates for 767 patents by the China National Intellectual Property Administration, including 284 invention patents. The administration has rated Trina as a “Leading National Intellectual Property Company” and awarded it the “Outstanding Award for Chinese Patents”.

Dr Feng Zhiqiang, vice-president of Trina Solar and director of its State Key Laboratory of PV Science and Technology, said: “We were delighted to hear that Trina Solar was selected as one of the Top 500 Chinese Companies by Patent. This affirms the company’s longstanding commitment to technical innovation and IP protection. Intellectual property underpins and safeguards the growth of innovation-led companies. We consider our IP processes a key component of the innovation processes used in our Centre for Technical Innovation. We will continue to refine our IP implementation strategy to create value for the company’s long-term growth and to serve as a model for industry development.”

The list of Top 500 Chinese Companies by Patent is issued jointly by the Huafa Guqin National IP Platform and partners. Nine evaluation criteria are taken into account, including number of patents, patent family, strength of patent, exclusive rights level, method level, characteristics, classification level, novelty and citations. Each criterion is given a corresponding weighting, and an overall evaluation is made of each company’s patent placement strategy, quality of patent applications and technical innovation. The “artificial intelligence + big data analysis” method is used to make calculations, statistics and analysis of patents from companies registered in China, giving a final value representing the strength of each company’s patents. The 500 companies with the most points are then announced as the Top 500.
