We are proud to announce that Ms. Weiwei Deng, a research scientist and senior manager at Trina Solar's State Key Laboratory of Photovoltaic Science and Technology (SKL PVST), Changzhou, China has received the prestigious IEEE PVSC Young Professional Award for 2017. The 44th IEEE PVSC awarded Ms. Weiwei Deng this honor due to her ongoing contributions in the development of very-high-efficiency mono- and multi-crystalline silicon passivated emitter and rear cell (PERC) technology.

"It is with great humility that I receive this prestigious award," said Ms. Weiwei Deng. "This award is really a recognition for the great work done by everyone in the PERC research team of Trina's SKL PVST. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this achievement. I also would like to thank Trina for its excellent platform resources."

Established in 2014, the IEEE Young Professional Award recognizes one individual every year who has made significant contributions to the science and technology of photovoltaic energy conversion and solar innovation. It's the highest award in the field of PV technology for young researchers around the world.

This award highlights Ms. Weiwei Deng and the Trina Solar team she's led for the past seven years. During this time, she and her team have been working exclusively on developing high-efficiency PERC silicon solar cells, and optimizing the cell design and process for large-scale industrial manufacturing.

In this capacity, Ms. Weiwei Deng and her team have set five efficiency world records for monocrystalline and multicrystalline P-type solar cells.

This award is a great honor for the Chinese PV industry. It reinforces the strategic focus on continued R&D investment by Trina Solar and showcases the technology leadership established by Trina Solar.

What is PERC tech?

PERC technology has been instrumental in advancing the efficiency limits of solar modules. The PERC tech replaces the standard back coating of conventional mono-crystalline solar cells with a rear surface passivation film. With this extra step in place, PERC solar modules absorb more light and experience higher internal reflectivity. This translates to a much more efficient solar cell and leads to a faster ROI for solar systems.

With Ms. Weiwei Deng as senior manager of the PERC solar cell research team at the State Key Labor, Trina Solar has achieved several major breakthroughs on industrial low-cost silicon solar cells. Most recently the team improved cell efficiencies up to 21.25 percent for multi-Si PERC and to 22.61 percent for mono-Si PERC. These energy conversion rates are pushing the technological development for the entire global PV industry.

While the award is a welcome recognition of the hard work Ms. Weiwei Deng has been undertaking, she is committed to pushing the efficiency levels of PERC PV cells even higher. The next step for her and her team is to approach as close as possible the 25 percent efficiency rating on an industrial scale.
