With falling tariff prices for PV products and a drop in product prices from the abundant supply in China, the demand for PV products in Australia has never been higher.

The PV-hungry market saw rooftop solar panel installations increase by nearly half in the first half of 2018 with businesses overtaking residential installations for the first time.

According to Green Energy Markets, the first half of the year saw PV installations achieve 701.9 megawatts, a 48.1% increase compared to the same time last year.

The demand from households is also growing with a current average of about 5 kilowatts per system in a bid from families to lower utility bills. According to Yin Rongfang, Trina Solar's president of global sales, more PV units are also expected to move. He added that falling battery costs will provide "a very competitive price" for PV owners, including households, by 2019 or 2020.

The commercial market has also seen an increase in demand with the availability of the eagerly awaited 15 kW commercial-sized systems, which accounted for a quarter of June's PV demand.

Projections show that total solar installations could go up to 4000 MW which is almost triple the previous record set in 2017.

The vice president of the Asia Pacific and Middle East at Trina Solar, Helena Li also indicated that commercial users would be able to match their energy generation demands.

"It's a three-to-four years' payback now for commercial [users]," Ms. Li said. "It makes more sense, especially with electricity [prices] rising."

Solar panel prices are currently 50 cents per kilowatt of capacity, but could fall to something below 40 cents in the future.
